Duchamp's exhibition

Elena Filipovic curator of the exhibition “Marcel Duchamp: A work that is not a work 'of art’" is in Buenos Aires working on the exhibition that will show in Fundacion Proa on 2008.

“Marcel Duchamp: A work that is not a work 'of art’" takes its title from Duchamp’s famous question “Can one make a work that is not a work ‘of art’?” and will present over 130 pieces by the artist of all media. The ensemble takes its starting point from the year 1913-14, Duchamp’s most pivotal year —when he not only invented the readymade but also produced a large body of work and each work, in its own way, challenged the concept of the traditional work of art. Starting from this watershed moment in Duchamp’s practice and tracing its development until the end of the artist’s life, the exhibition brings together rare and exceptional works for an unprecedented presentation of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.

Filipovic is a writer, art historian, and independent curator. She is a specialist on Marcel Duchamp and has written and lectured extensively about his work alongside a commitment to more contemporary practices. She is currently completing a doctorate in art history at Princeton University about Duchamp’s exhibitions and role as curator in particular. Her other activities include being co-curator, with Adam Szymczyk, of the 5th Berlin Biennial to open in April 2008 and guest tutor of theory/exhibition history at De Appel postgraduate curatorial training program in Amsterdam. She was co-editor of The Manifesta Decade: Debates on Contemporary Art Exhibitions and Biennials in Post-Wall Europe (Roomade and MIT Press, 2005), and curated, most recently, Let Everything Be Temporary, or When is the Exhibition? for Apex Art in New York and Anachronism at Argos Center for Art and Media in Brussels.
