El sábado 6 de julio se inaugura en las salas de Fundación Proa la exhibición Minimalismo, posminimalismo y conceptualismo / 60’ - 70’. Con la curaduría de Katharine J. Wright, la muestra tiene como objetivo exponer los inicios y fundamentos del arte minimalista, posminimalista y conceptual, tendencias artísticas que revolucionaron las narrativas contemporáneas.

Una exhaustiva propuesta curatorial reúne al grupo de artistas fundadores de los movimientos con sus obras tempranas. Los renombrados - Dan Flavin con sus piezas de tubos fluorescentes, Sol LeWitt con sus propuestas conceptuales en sus Wall drawings, objetos y diseños, Fred Sandback con sus sutiles piezas que delimitan el espacio y Bruce Nauman con su obra de Neón y videos - todos ellos presentados con sus piezas tempranas, dan cuenta de la intensidad e influencia de estos movimientos en el arte contemporáneo.

La muestra presentará en el mes de agosto una instalación de Dan Graham en el espacio público, especialmente diseñado para Proa, convirtiéndose en la primera obra de este artista en nuestro país. Un notable acontecimiento que explora las posibilidades de intervenir y transformar el espacio.

Minimalismo, posminimalismo y conceptualismo son conceptos usados en varias disciplinas artísticas que invadieron los espacios de la arquitectura, de las artes visuales, de la música, etc. Conocer sus orígenes y apreciar sus primeras obras permite entender los motivos de la rebelión en el contexto de la época. La idea del concepto sobre la materialidad de las obras, la austeridad, el silencio, la contemplación, son algunas de las propuestas que conforman este universo estético.

Proa desarrolla un exhaustivo programa de actividades en el marco de la muestra: conciertos, performance, video proyecciones, seminarios y cursos a distancia son algunos de los intensos y prolíficos programas que se están diseñando.

Minimalismo, posminimalismo y conceptualismo / 60’ - 70’ reúne obras de valor histórico y la muestra se convierte en una pieza de estudio para conocer los movimientos del arte del siglo XX, como es tradición en Proa. Las obras provienen de Glenstone Museum (Potomac, Maryland), David Zwirner (Nueva York), Paula Cooper Gallery (Nueva York), Galería Cayón (Madrid/Minorca/Manila) y Electronic Arts Intermix (Nueva York).

La muestra cuenta con el patrocinio de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos en Argentina y el auspicio de Tenaris, Organización Techint. Podrá visitarse hasta fines de octubre de 2019, de martes a domingo de 11 a 19 hs en Fundación Proa.

This exhibition introduces foundational examples of minimalism, post-minimalism and conceptualism, artistic movements that revolutionized contemporary art of the 1960s and 1970s. With groundbreaking works by pioneering artists Dan Flavin, Dan Graham, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman and Fred Sandback, the exhibition reveals how these movements challenged the art historical canon in the postwar period and continue to do so today.

Since its early beginnings, Fundación Proa has been committed to presenting the most radical artists and artworks of the twentieth century. In 1998, Proa hosted a major exhibition on Dan Flavin; in December 2001, we presented six extraordinary wall drawings by Sol LeWitt. Today, more than two decades later, the conceptual and theoretical proposals of these artists are more pressing than ever and we are delighted to revisit them in this wide-ranging group show. Alongside important works by Bruce Nauman and Fred Sandback—plus a new commission by Dan Graham—our exhibition reveals the astonishingly varied and vital innovations made by American artists in the post-war era, reminding us of their radical impact both then and now.

Looking at thoughts, the concept enunciated by the critic Donald Kuspit, is a valid key to approaching these works, which bear more resemblance to everyday objects than to any form of "Art": fluorescent tubes fixed to the wall, acrylic yarn tensioned from floor to ceiling, gridded structures stretching across the room. Consequently, they challenge all preconceptions about what art is, how it is made and how it relates to the viewer. The five artists in this show share a common spirit: the desire to involve the viewer, both physically and mentally, and open a dialogue that departs from traditional representation to enter the realm of pure conceptual exchange. Above all, their work demonstrates that the minimal, post-minimal and conceptual art movements—which developed nearly concurrently in the late 1960s—offered a renegade reimagination of the very essence of art by privileging the core idea behind a work over its material form.

Each room of the exhibition captures this critical conceptual shift in the course of contemporary art by presenting key works by Dan Flavin, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, and Fred Sandback that were specially chosen to respond to Fundación Proa’s unique gallery space. In August 2019, Dan Graham will inaugurate a site-specific work that will be housed on the public terrace in front of the museum. This interactive sculptural installation will be a landmark attraction in Buenos Aires, allowing Proa to once again highlight the neighborhood of La Boca as a unique site where historical and contemporary art thrive.
