Starting November 16, Fundación Proa presents the first South American exhibition of sculptor Ron Mueck. Conceived by Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and curated by its director Hervé Chandès and associate curator Grazia Quaroni, the exhibition's itinerary will continue in the Museu de Arte Moderna do Río de Janeiro from March through June 2014.
Ron Mueck's work is inscribed in the sculptural tradition of the human figure, although the subjects, materials and techniques he employs make him an original, innovative and contemporary artist. His sculptures captivate through the change in scale and the realism of his characters, whose gestures subtly convey situations that are full of life and mystery.
A mother with his son; couples young or old, restless or at ease; a naked man, alone and astray on a boat; these are some of the images that are found in the exhibition. Works that convey a sense of vital and profound inner life, and that express that artist's obsession with technical perfection and with truth. Mueck utilizes resin, fiberglass, silicon and acrylic paint to faithfully represent all the details of human anatomy and construct sculptures that deal with life and death. His works evoke a type of realism that is at once intimate and monumental. In different scales, the artist extraordinarily increases or reduces the size of the body to create situations that touch on the emotions of the spectator. In his text for the catalogue of the exhibition, Robert Storr writes: "His sculptural vignettes are from scenarios that have no beginnings or ends but only uncertain middles, scenarios that do not exist outside of their singular incarnation as stand-alone objects".
In representation of Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Grazia Quaroni will be present in Buenos Aires and available for interviews and meetings with the press.
The exhibition, conceived by Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, with the support of the French Embassy in Argentina, is sponsored by Tenaris – Organización Techint in Argentina and Brasil.
