Her recent video work Lens Prism(2010) presents a continuous monologue spoken by an accomplished actor in the simply-lit, atmospheric theatre space of Tramway in Glasgow. His script is made up of a wide variety of 19th and 20th century reference points from literature, history, theory and film and which include Chris Marker’s influential science fiction film, La Jetée (1962), the experimental writings of the poet Raymond Roussell and a description of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The actor reflects on the discrepancy between memory and reality as he recounts in detail a sculpture remembered from a photograph but it transpires that his memory bears little relation to the photograph itself. As the actor muses on these seemingly unrelated subjects, the film itself becomes the prism through which these are reflected and refracted.
Corin Sworn (1976, London, England) lives and works in Glasgow and Vancouver. She is interested in the ways that narratives can be appropriated, disrupted and re-edited to construct different stories and alternative meanings. Her research-based practice (which also includes sculpture, drawing and installation) weaves together a complex mesh of fragmented references and memories to reveal the subjectivity of personal experience.
Recent solo exhibitions include Art Now at Tate Britain (2011), Tramway(2010) and Washington Garcia for Glasgow International (2010). Group exhibitions include: Jerwood Film and Video Umbrella Awards/Tomorrow Never Knows, London (2012), Hors Pistes, Centre Pompidou, (2011) Morality, Witte de With (2010), EAST International (2009), Kunsthalle Basel (2009), Participant Inc., New York (2008).
