Introduction to an audiovisual Buenos Aires: the image on the spotlight.
Buenos Aires starts in this room with artistic images that sum up the contents of the whole exhibition. First we have the very first images of the foundation of Buenos Aires, and then we can see the city as it has appeared in Argentine film history.
The City that was Founded Twice presents a research on the painting of our city’s foundation, which was made (funny enough, in Spain) on occasion of the Buenos Aires’ Centenary. This documentary shows how these paintings, so present in our collective imaginary, have a hidden story that unveils their ironic future.
In the Cinema shows the city as the main character of several film sequences that show the evolution of cinema, its history and the different points of view of the filmmakers.
This dialogue between painting and cinema opens the way for the whirlwind, the chaos and the speed of this great city.

Modern times and contemporary appropriations
During the first decades of the 20th century, urbanistic changes in the city transformed the old Spanish-style grid into a layout with wide avenues and diagonals. This important shift crystallized in the Plaza de la República and the Obelisco. The Plaza quickly became a place for gatherings, celebrations and protests, and together with the Obelisco, created a heated aesthetic discussion that started with their very construction and, across many decades and changes, carries on to this day.
A circular structure at the centre of the room is divided into several sectors that host various artistic fragments dedicated to the Obelisco. Among them, the blueprints and projects of its creator, architect Alberto Prebisch, and a documentary video that explains its history, since its controversial beginnings and construction up until today, through all kinds of documents and photographs by Horacio Coppola, Grete Stern, Sara Facio, Anne Marie Henrich, Alicia D´Amico, Anatole Saderman, Gastón Bourquin, Juan Di Sandro and a contemporary vision provided by the pictures of Facundo de ZuvirÃa.
The images that depict the Plaza de la República through time can be seen in a collection of postcards and commemorative medals that, with the Obleisco as their central image, show how this monument became the symbol of Buenos Aires. This segment reinforces the concept by which anonymous images, along with those created by artists, documents the many appropriations, celebrations and gatherings that take place when the civil society takes hold of this public space.
The works of Marta MinujÃn, Edgardo Giménez, Leandro Katz, Antonio SeguÃ, Graciela Harper, Leandro Erlich and Marcos López show us new possibilities for this icon of Buenos Aires: the Obelisco laying down, horizontally; or in dialogue with the Tour Eiffel; the possibility of removing it from its place or moving to another part of the city. These works pose questions to the city and its population.

The city: contrasts and limits
The Buenos Aires of the “limit”, the one that has grown in population and in emergency settlements, the one of constant shifts and movements, of multidirectional crossings between centre and periphery. The city that stages its crisis on its very facades, and whose contemporary scenario is populated by a cast of new social actors: the homeless, the cartoneros, the new forms of street labour, the legal and illegal immigrants, the ecologists, the outcasts, among many others.
In this gallery, the selection of artists and work pose the city’s problems from within its very core. Overpopulation and housing shortage are represented in the work of Oscar Bony, a photograph pierced by real bullets from his Suicidios series. Ten years later, Gian Paolo Minelli depicts a similar scene, comparing those overcrowded settlements with the new architecture of the urban landscape. From a similar angle, Marcos López’s video installation emphasizes the orange, hollow bricks of Villa 31, and contrasts them with the HD definition of his footage, thus exposing the distance between poverty and technology.
Ana Gallardo and Liliana Maresca worked the concept of the street cart in the City of Buenos Aires. The first one, based in the artist’s personal experience, is a cart turned into a sort of mobile home that wanders through the city, looking for a place to settle down. The other one, the “carro blanco”, is art’s ironic and aesthetic take on the waste carts than can be seen throughout the city, transforming them into a piece of art and thus confronting the viewer. Estalislao Florido’s video shares that same view, and crudely shows the reality of Buenos Aires’ “cartoneros”.
Sergio Avello documents a night tour through the city during the troubled times of 2002. The photographs that compose Flaneur starts out with the protests against banks and politicians, furiously scribbled in homemade banners posted on the streets, and ends on the other side of town, where the opposite end of those demands takes the form of luxury, jewels and the general idea of beauty and wellbeing. On a similar note, Juan Travnik’s Bancos series compiles close-up shots of the banks facades, vandalized by the same protests of that convulse Buenos Aires.Sergio Avello

Buenos Aires in the voices and imaginaries of the future
Buenos Aires culminates in this gallery, that shows a variety of works based on the concept of imagination.
A series of drawings and etchings made in 1910, projecting “The city of the future”: how would Buenos Aires look a hundred years from then. Today, having even passed that date, we look at these pictures that imagined the wildest solutions for many of the problems that trouble the city today and that they had already foreshadowed.
Literature has its place in the sound installation “En obra”. The vacant, barren lot was chosen by Daniel Link to express how language displays its visual power in the total absence of images. The voices of writers reading passages of 20 and 21st centuries literary pieces also let us “visualize” the city. Next to the installation, Sebastián Freire exhibits a series of photographic portraits he took during the recording sessions with the writers.
The gallery closes with a library and a space where, like a bibliography of the city, we can read books, watch films, play with the children or study, learn and, even, protest.Anónimo
