HERE WE ARE! WOMEN IN DESIGN 1900 - TODAY

Organized by: Vitra Design Museum – Fundación Proa
Curated by: Viviane Stappmanns – Nina Steinmüller – Susanne Graner
Sponsored by: Tenaris – Ternium - Tecpetrol

Fundación Proa celebrates the reopening of its renovated spaces with an extraordinary exhibition organized in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum: “Here We Are! Women in Design 1900 – Today,” a journey through 120 years of creativity, innovation, and female talent in design.

For the first time in Argentina, the Vitra Design Museum's collection is presented with a selection of iconic pieces—from furniture and lighting to textiles, utilitarian objects, and graphic works—created by women who transformed the discipline. In parallel, Proa dedicates a special section to Argentine designers who have shaped and continue to shape trends in the country.

The exhibition begins with a historical overview, highlighting the first women graphic designers of the early 20th century who introduced a new aesthetic in the context of the struggle for women’s suffrage and equal rights. Academic opportunities only began to emerge with the founding of schools like the Bauhaus, marking a new chapter in which figures such as Eileen Gray, Charlotte Perriand, and Anni Albers shaped authorial design. By the mid-20th century, the expansion of the textile industry, ceramics, and household objects brought these creations to a global audience. Today, design continues to evolve through innovative materials and sustainable perspectives.

Developed from extensive research, the exhibition traces a path through the history of industrial development and the discovery of new materials, leading to the challenges and questions of the present. The Argentine section follows this same historical thread, highlighting key figures such as Celina A. de Pirovano, Lucrecia Moyano, Susy Aczel, Diana Cabeza, and Josefina Robirosa, as well as new generations redefining contemporary design. It is a unique opportunity to explore how design has shaped our daily lives and how women have been central to that transformation.

“Here We Are! Women in Design 1900 – Today” is organized around four thematic sections that chronologically explore the evolution of women’s academic training and professional practice through original works from the Vitra Design Museum. The exhibition also features Argentine design objects and pieces from Fundación IDA and notable private collectors in the country.

In an era marked by climate change and humanitarian crises, the exhibition’s curators—Viviane Stappmanns, Nina Steinmüller, and Susanne Graner—highlight the pressing question of how design practice can avoid—or even prevent—overconsumption, excessive resource use, and inequality.

This exhibition is made possible thanks to the continued support of our sponsors, Tenaris–Ternium, and to the dedicated team at Fundación Proa and external collaborators, whose generosity and commitment made this project possible.
